Transport Visualisation Spotlight
Outstanding visualisations of transport and mobilities, curated by the Transport Visualisation Collective (Frédéric Dobruszkes, Maël Dupriez and Jean-Clément Ullès) under the auspices of the IGU Transport & Geography Commission. The series is published on LinkedIn and optimised for smartphone reading.
About
Transport Visualisation Spotlight showcases outstanding visualisations of transport and mobilities, whether static or animated, selected for both their scientific value and the quality of their visual communication. Graphical choices should always serve the message. Innovation is welcome, but never for its own sake.
The visual material should do more than illustrate the topic: it should reveal, demonstrate or make tangible something about transport or mobilities.
There is no fixed publication schedule: we publish when we have something worth showing.
Guidelines
We welcome submissions such as a static map, a diagram or cartogram, a short animation, a morphing, a time-lapse, etc. Please send your submission to tvs@etik.com as two files:
- The visualisation itself (see below).
- A document containing the following:
o CONCISE TITLE THAT INCLUDES THE MAIN MESSAGE (CAPITAL LETTERS)
o By [@authors with LinkedIn links + short affiliations] (in italics)
o Your short text explaining why it matters and what the visualisation shows (max. 200 words)
o An open question to kick the debate (max. 50 words)
o References/links/hashtags to publications (preferably open source), data sources, webpages, etc. (if any)
The visualisation shall meet the following submission requirements.
PRINCIPLES:
• The visualisation must be specifically designed for smartphone reading rather than being a reduced version of an A4 figure
• The visualisation should remain readable without zooming
• The concise title must be embedded at the top of the visualisation itself and state the main message
• Every graphic element must serve the message (no chartjunk)
SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE VISUALISATION:
• The aspect ratio should be chosen to best suit the visualisation. Portrait with a 4:5 ratio (e.g., 108 mm x 135 mm) is generally preferred for smartphone readability, but square and landscape formats are welcome where appropriate.
• Minimum width of 1080 pixels
• RGB colour scheme
• Spatial objects, fonts, font size, key, symbols and colours are optimised for smartphone reading
• Sans serif fonts (e.g., Arial, Calibri and Helvetica) are preferred over serif fonts (e.g., Times New Roman)
• File format: static material in PNG, animated material in MP4 although GIF is also accepted
Accepted contributions will be posted to the Transport Visualisation Spotlight Linkedin page by the series’ team.
Copyright and permissions
By submitting visual material to Transport Visualisation Spotlight, authors confirm that they own the necessary rights or have obtained the necessary permission to publish it on LinkedIn. Authors retain copyright in their work.
By submitting their contribution, authors grant the Transport Visualisation Collective permission to publish and repost the submitted visual material and accompanying text on its LinkedIn presence and on the LinkedIn accounts of the organisations and individuals involved in the initiative, with clear attribution to the author(s).
Reposts of the original LinkedIn post are welcome. Reuse of the visual material outside the original post remains subject to the copyright terms specified by its author(s).
